THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS

Life is characterised by so many ups and downs.  I imagine a frequency line alternating from high to low and back to high then low consistently, that is life. It seems there often aren’t long stretches of happiness and contentedness yet it seems the stretches of lows are much longer.  Our life experiences often leave us scarred and reluctant to trust people.

In the pursuit for happiness, one just has to be resilient, tough and have a backbone made of steel.  Happiness is rarely if ever handed on a silver platter, it must be pursued.   I have come to learn some gold nuggets in my own pursuit and I would like to share these with you:

Find out who you really are

We are all blessed with talents and abilities yet it is so sad to note that many of us do not use these gifts.  We were laden with these abilities so that we could make use of them to improve our lives, the lives of our loved ones and the community.  These gifts and abilities make up who you are. When one consistently feels stuck and unhappy in a certain calling, this is an indication that they are where they aren’t supposed to be.  One must make the time to find out who they really are through honest self-introspection.

Make use of your talents and abilities as best as you can

We are created as beings that are happiest when we are exercising our talents and abilities.  In this state, we are most confident, most sure of what we stand for, most fulfilled and life bears meaning and purpose.  As one puts to use their talents and abilities, they open more doors of opportunity and growth is sure to follow.

Purpose to grow

One very big cause of unhappiness and discontentment is a lack of growth.  As humans, it is a part of our make-up to expect personal growth.  Growth is an indication that the effort one is putting in is recognised and useful.  It is an indication that we are effecting a positive change.  This is the essence of our existence to grow and leave a positive mark.

Bring others up

In the pursuit of happiness one must bring others up too.  Encourage them to go through the process that you went through to get to the stage where you are and even beyond.  Every generation needs people that will work hard towards effecting positive change and one must play their part in bringing up the next generation.  This is a part of the equation in the pursuit of happiness.  The people one brings up may not necessarily be in the same field, they may not have the same abilities or talents as you.  They are people that want to see a positive change one way or the other and seek guidance to achieve this end.

Let someone else take over

There definitely will come a time when energy levels are not as high as they used to be and the brain is not as sharp or adaptable.  A good leader understands when it is time to let someone else take over from them.  The world around us is ever evolving and one cannot always keep up with the trends.  Being able to recognise when it is time to hand over the reins and rest is a sure road to happiness and contentment as this is the general cycle of life.

Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do something.  Not even me.  You got a dream, you gotta protect it.  When people can’t do something themselves, they’re gonna tell you that you can’t do it.  You want something, go get it.  Period.”  From the Movie – “The Pursuit of Happyness”
